Welcome to the SPARROW sequence based protein secondary structure prediction server

SPARROW stands for Secondary structure Predicting ARRays of Optimized Weights, or alternatively, for Secondary Protein ARRangement by means of Optimized Weights. These weights are the result of a machine learning procedure based on multi-linear regression.

In these pages, you can find out more about SPARROW's origin or submit your own sequence (or PSI-BLAST profile) for prediction.

Below you can see an output example of the SPARROW server for human hemoglobin alpha subunit (PDB: 2YRS, chain A), residues 1 to 40. The prediction was made using *SPARROW with the EVA standard output. For more information on the output format visit the help page.

News

  • 3 April, 2017 - SPARROW prediction server is suspended until further notice due to technical problems.
  • 5 August, 2011 - Both SPARROW 1.0 and *SPARROW 1.0 are now available for download in the download section.
  • 14 June, 2011 - Result plots now contain an additional confidence curve.
  • 31 May, 2011 - *SPARROW has been added as a new prediction method and can now be chosen when submitting a job.
  • 5 January, 2011 - Residue number information is now visible by hovering over the prediction string.
  • 3 November, 2010 - The secondary structure propensity scores are now normalized in the interval [0,1].
  • 3 June, 2010 - The confidence function has been improved. The confidence values for the three secondary structure classes are now more even.

Note: Though operational, the server is still in an experimental phase. We apologize for any problems that may occur to the jobs you submit. We are very interested in any feedback you might be willing to grant us.
